I'm Dr. Erica
Well, hello there! I'm Dr. Sails and I'm a board-certified obesity medicine specialist and family physician. But that's just the beginning of who I am! I'm also a mom, a wife, and a serial entrepreneur. And let's not forget that I'm a Christian who believes that living our best life is what our Creator wants for us.
Now, here's the fun part: I specialize in helping women 40+ Get Their Sexy Back™, lose weight, and optimize health. And as a member of the national association of menopause and perimenopause, I'm here to guide you, ladies through those tricky years. I have many years of working not only with women's health, but optimizing lifestyle for health and weight loss! What do I mean optimize health? I Provide strategies and tools that in many cases can reverse type 2 diabetes, autoimmune disease, High blood pressure, and the list goes on.
But seriously, ladies, I know firsthand how tough it can be to stay healthy and feel good as we age. That's why I'm here to help you find the right nutrition and exercise plan; figure out ways to manage your hormones, and navigate the challenges of losing weight. MY STORY
Have you ever walked by the mirror and thought—"wow, where did my 20 year old body go?". If you have, you are not alone. My 40's came along and something new started. I experienced weight gain, particularly around my mid section. Interestingly enough, I was so busy recovering from a complicated knee injury and surgery that I had trouble pinpointing why this was happening. Truly, it was only in hindsight a couple of years later that I was able to put it together.
The light bulb went off. I realized I was not as active due to the knee injury and had entered perimenopause. I was not sleeping well and was frustrated with the slow knee recovery. I was not able to walk without crutches or a cane. In addition to that, I had night sweats and was irritable from not sleeping well. I also had a new affinity for fried potatoes and onions. I was not in a good place.
After 2 years of physical therapy, personal training and Pilates, I eventually walked again without crutches/canes and made it back to the gym. But, it was definitely an uphill battle to get into shape and get my head back in the workout game. Cardio did not make these "love handles" go away. Eating less and working out more was not the answer. The belly fat persisted. My metabolism had slowed down. It was rather depressing.
True to my training, I began to do research in our medical literature and studied the habits of bikini athletes. I studied the science behind weight gain and became board certified in obesity medicine. I found a plethora of information on nutrition, exercise, and behavior. I joined the North American Menopause Society for physicians and providers and learned even more-- like the connection between weight gain and my hormones. I came up with a strategy and framework that I applied from this knowledge to my own life and I was able to lose 10 lbs. in about month. I cleaned up my total plant based diet and became consistent at the table and in the gym. I shared with patients these strategies to help them on their weight loss journey and the results were reproducible! People began to lose weight, reverse type 2 Diabetes and in many instances, lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They felt energized & alive and the benefits were far reaching-not just weight loss, but health optimized, sleep improved, mindset improved, relationships were strengthened, productivity soared, clarity of thought was present, and so much more! That's why I am here--to share with you my framework and strategies to help you not only lose weight but to truly feel energized and alive again!
